Blog Fifty-One
Good Monday Morning
A thought to start the week, fairly true to all of us at Dylan Cunha Racing, waiting for the flat turf season to start; “Two things define us. Our patience when we have nothing and our attitude when we have everything!”
It was a truly fantastic weekend of international flat racing. The Japanese dominated the Saudi Cup Race-meeting and it was fascinating viewing watching truly run Group Races. Newmarket had a lovely winner on the night with Mostadaf winning easily for Team Gosden and Shadwell. There’s great jockey cam footage from Frankie Dettori on my Twitter page.
In South Africa the Cape Derby was won by former British Champion Jockey Michael “Muis” Roberts, now a trainer. See It Again, sired by ex Henry Cecil inmate Twice Over won really well under a fine ride from another legend Pierre Strydom who’s not far off retirement as a jockey and over 5500 winners worldwide. In a interesting link to this story locally here, Kyle Strydom, Pierre’s nephew who is South African Champion Apprentice and has ridden 103 winners, will shortly be based at HQ for Roger Varian and we will certainly be using his services in the future as well.
Golden Sixty finished a fine weekend of international flat racing, winning another Gr1 in Hong Kong. He was a fair way back and got up with a few strides to go to retain his crown as king of Hong Kong.
As British Racing continues to be a nursery for the rest of the world due to poor prize money and high costs to owners, Japans dominance this past weekend must surely raise a few more red flags and eyebrows for the people in charge and hopefully some work is being done behind the scenes to improve prize money and lower costs for owners to try and keep the best Bloodstock in the UK. The worlds greatest races are still here (for now) and I truly hope the UK can regain its international dominance with local horses.
Our two syndicates Catch Us If You Can Racing and Quest Thoroughbreds have a few shares left in some lovely horses but they are selling out fast, so get involved and join the fun ahead this summer.
Our yard is hard at work behind the scenes prepping for the summer. So much time, effort, thought, blood, love, care, sweat and tears go in from the whole team every day, all working to try and have a successful season ahead and get the horses fit, healthy and sound. We are all exited with a lot more to work with this year, even though still a really small yard.
We have space for more horses and owners and will also be attending all the sales ahead.
I am looking for a sponsor to join our brand and sponsor the yard. There will be a lot of exposure, linked to all our branding, social media, staff & equine clothing and rugging etc and branding on our horsebox. The exposure will be out there which includes television and all media coverage. This could be an exciting opportunity for a company that recognises a growing and innovative brand and wants to partner with us. Get in touch with me for further details.
We are currently working behind the scenes to update and give our website a new more interactive face with updated content, so keep an eye out for this. Included will also be an-online shop where you can order our Dylan Cunha Racing branded merchandise through a link directly to the manufacturer.
I was happy to see one of my favourite jockeys Glyn Schofield safely retire from a highly successful career. Glyn rode my first Gr1 winner and rode a few other winners for me, always displaying the ultimate professionalism and he was a master of race tactics besides being a highly skilled rider. Glyn enjoyed a really successful career in South Africa and Hong Kong before being based in Sydney down under in Australia for the past 15 years where he’s regularly ridden Gr1 winners. Glyn’s son Chad Schofield was also a really good jockey in Hong Kong and continues to fly the family name down under, having won another Gr1 only a couple of weeks ago. Happy retirement Glyn and thank you for the great memories.
